Ownership Requirements
Q. I am borrowing someone else’s Paint Horse this year, can I still show and get WPHC or APHA points?
A. The answer depends on the category in which you will be exhibiting. Following is the answer for the different categories:
Open Classes:
- People showing horses in open classes do not have to own the horse in order to exhibit it at any APHA approved show. In order to receive APHA points and awards in open classes, the owner of the horse must be a current member of the APHA. (see APHA rule GR 020-H)
- In order to receive WPHC points in open classes, the owner of the horse must be a member of the WPHC, but the exhibitor does not have to be a member. In open classes the points are awarded to the horse, not the exhibitor.
- Youth showing horses in Leadline, Walk-Trot, Youth or Novice Youth classes do not have to own the horse in order to exhibit it at any APHA approved show. Novice Youth exhibitors MUST have a current eligibility card from the APHA in order to exhibit in these classes. See “Membership Requirements” above.
- In order to receive APHA points and awards in youth classes, the horse must be owned by the youth or the youth’s immediate family (mother, father, stepparent, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother or sister, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, legal guardian or grandparent), family-owned corporation, ranch or farm. Exception: Leadline or Walk-Trot classes. In addition, the youth exhibitor must be a member in good standing with the AjPHA. (see APHA rule YP-015)
- In order to receive WPHC points, the exhibitor does not have to own the horse, nor does the horse have to be owned by the youth’s immediate family. The owner of the horse and the exhibitor do have to be members in good standing of the WPHC and the youth exhibitor must also be a member in good standing of the WJPHC in order to be eligible for points in youth classes. Points are awarded from the time all memberships are paid.
Amateur/Novice Amateur Classes:
- Any horse exhibited in Amateur and Novice Amateur classes MUST be owned by the amateur or their immediate family (spouse, mother, father, child, stepparent, stepchild, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother or sister, legal ward, inlaws, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, grandchild, grandparent), solely owned corporation, ranch or farm. (see APHA rule AM-020).
- Exhibitors may not “borrow” a horse from another individual to show in Amateur or Novice Amateur classes unless they meet one of the immediately family requirements stated above. Also excluded are horses under lease, owned jointly or in partnership
- Amateur and Novice Amateur exhibitors must also have a current year membership card from the APHA indicating their Amateur or Novice Amateur status in order to exhibit at an APHA approved show in these classes (see APHA rule AM-010). This card or a legible copy must be presented to the show management at each show in order to compete in Amateur or Novice Amateur classes.
- The WPHC must follow the APHA rules regarding ownership. In order to be eligible for WPHC points, the owner and exhibitor of the horse must both be members of the WPHC and the exhibitor must be a member of the WAPHC. Points will be awarded from the time all memberships are paid.
